PsychoDermatology and PDAI

Psychodermatology is a relatively less explored discipline, which deals with the psychiatric component of the dermatological diseases. More than 30% of patients presenting with dermatological complaints have an underlying psychological morbidity, which is not catered to, either due to lack of awareness or inability to devote sufficient time for counseling patients in a busy clinic. The intricate relationship between the skin and mind has been explored and investigated at molecular levels. If the treating dermatologist suspects an underlying psychological morbidity; interrogation, counseling, interdisciplinary referral, and help of support groups should be sought. Patients suffering from conditions like psoriasis, vitiligo, alopecia areata, acne etc. have significant deterioration of quality of life, and most of these patients have anxiety, depression, stress and other psychological issues. Similarly, psychiatrists coming across dermatological issues in their patients, should seek referral to concerned specialist, for adequate care and management.

Psychodermatology Association of India (PDAI) strives to explore the interrelationship between the two facets of medicine i.e. dermatology and psychiatry. Moreover, we plan to develop consensus guidelines for management of patients with psychocutaneous disorders. We look forward to receive valuable suggestions and feedback from the members of PDAI.
